Cutting Chart

The fabric requirements for the entire quilt are available here. Cut all strips on the crosswise grain of the fabric (from selvage to selvage).

Getting Started

Seam allowances are 1/4". Refer to Accurate Seam Allowance. Whenever possible, use the Assembly Line Method. Press seams in direction of arrows.

Pieces Needed for Block One

Fabric A (green)

From 5 1/2" x 42" strip, cut:

  • One 5 1/2" square
  • Two 5 1/2" x 2 1/2" pieces

From 3 1/2" x 42" strip, cut:

  • Three 3 1/2" squares

Fabric B (red)

From 5 1/2" x 42" strip, cut:

  • Two 5 1/2" squares

From 2 1/2" x 42" strip, cut:

  • One 2 1/2" x 5 1/2" piece
  • One 2 1/2" square

From 1 1/2" x 42" strip, cut:

  • One 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" piece

Fabric C (dark red)

From 2 1/2" x 42" strip, cut:

  • Two 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" pieces
  • One 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" piece

From 1 1/2" x 42" strip, cut:

  • One 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" piece

Fabric D (brown)

From 1 1/2" x 42" strip, cut:

  • One 1 1/2" x 10 1/2" piece

Making the Block

  1. Refer to Quick Corner Triangles. Sew one 3 1/2" Fabric A square to one 5 1/2" Fabric B square as shown. Press. Make two.
  2. Sew one 5 1/2" x 2 1/2" Fabric A piece to one unit from step 1 as shown. Press. Make two, one of each variation.
  3. Sew one 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" Fabric B piece to one 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" Fabric C piece as shown. Press.
  4. Sew one 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" Fabric C piece to unit from step 3 as shown. Press.
  5. Sew one 3 1/2" Fabric A square to unit from step 4 as shown. Press.
  6. Sew one 2 1/2" Fabric B square to one 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" Fabric C piece as shown. Press.
  7. Sew unit from step 6 to one 2 1/2" x 5 1/2" Fabric B piece as shown. Press.
  8. Sew unit from step 7 to one 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" Fabric C piece as shown. Press.
  9. Sew units from step 5 and step 8 together as shown. Press.
  10. Arrange and sew together two units from step 2, unit from step 9, and one 5 1/2" Fabric A square as shown. Press.
  11. Refer to Quick-Fuse Appliqué. Use butterfly body pattern to trace one butterfly body on fusible web. Use 1 1/2" x 10 1/2" Fabric D piece to prepare butterfly body for fusing.
  12. Refer to block diagram above to position and fuse butterfly body to block as shown. Finish appliqué edges with machine satin stitch or other decorative stitching as desired.
  13. Refer to Embroidery Stitch Guide and block diagram and use two strands of black embroidery floss and a stem stitch to embroider butterfly antennae. Block One measures 12 1/2" square (unfinished).
