This small wallhanging is just the right size to add that special accent to your décor.

Fabric Requirements and Cutting Instructions

Read all instructions before beginning and use 1/4”-wide seam allowances throughout. Read Cutting Strips and Pieces prior to cutting fabric.

Getting Started

Use the motifs of the Tuscany countryside as alternate blocks in this small wallhanging. The added ‘mock' piping accents the Olive Branch appliqués. Blocks measure 8 1/2” unfinished. Refer to Accurate Seam Allowance and whenever possible use the Assembly Line Method of sewing. Press seams in direction of arrows.

Preparing for ‘mock' piping.

1. Mark a diagonal line on wrong side of one 4 3/4” Fabric C square. Make 12.
2. On right side of one 4 3/4” Fabric C square, line up 1/4” line of ruler on corners and mark this line. Note: Make sure that line marked in step 1 is going the same direction as this line.) Make 12.
   
   
   
3. Fold 1” Fabric D strips in half lengthwise. Press. Make 3.
4. Line up raw edges of folded Fabric D piece on marked line from step 2. Baste in place. Make 12.
   
   

Making the Blocks

1. Refer to Quick Corner Triangles to sew four 4 3/4” Fabric C squares to one 9” Fabric B square as shown. Press. Make 3. Note: Place folded edge of ‘mock' piping towards center of block. Only one corner is shown. Label Block 1.
   
   
   
   
   
2. Trim and square Block 1 to 8 1/2” square.

Adding the Appliqués

1. Refer to Quick-Fuse Appliqué instructions. Our instructions are for Quick-Fuse Appliqué, but if you prefer hand appliqué, reverse patterns and add 1/4”-wide seam allowances throughout. Use patterns to trace two regular and one reversed of all pattern pieces. Use appropriate fabrics to prepare all appliqués for fusing.
   
   
2. Refer to photo and fuse Olive Branch appliqués to centers of Block One. Finish appliqué edges with machine satin stitch or other decorative stitching if desired.

Assembling the Wallhanging

1. Referring to photo, sew one unit from step 2 and one 8 1/2” Fabric A square together as shown. Press. Make 2.
   
   
   
2. Referring to photo, sew one 8 1/2” Fabric A square to one unit from step 2 as shown. Press.
   
3. Referring to photo, sew one 1 1/4” x 16 1/2” Fabric E strip to bottom of units from step 1 and 2. Press.
   
   
   
   
4. Referring to photo, lay out rows and sew together. Press.
5. Sew one 1 1/4” x 16 1/2” Fabric E piece to top of unit from step 4 as shown. Press.
   
   

Adding the Borders

1. Sew 1” x 16 1/2” Fabric D strips to top and bottom of unit from step 5 above. Press. Sew 1” x 28 1/2” Fabric D strips to sides of quilt as shown. Press.
   
2. Sew 2 1/2” x 17 1/2” Fabric E strips to top and bottom of unit from step 1. Press.
   
3. Sew 2 1/2” x 32 1/2” Fabric E strips to sides of quilt as shown. Press.
   

Layering and Finishing

1. Refer to Layering the Quilt and arrange and baste backing, batting, and top together. Hand or machine quilt as desired.
2. Refer to Binding the Quilt and use 2 3/4”-wide Binding Strips to bind quilt to finish.
