Round-Up Lap or Twin Quilt
Get ready for the next Round-Up with this eye-catching western quilt. Make either the lap size or the twin size for your favorite cowboy. Cutting and construction instructions for the lap quilt are in black; information for the twin-size quilt is in red. Fabric Requirements and Cutting Instructions
Read all instructions before beginning and use 1/4”-wide seam allowances throughout. Read Cutting Strips and Pieces prior to cutting fabric.

Getting Started
This quilt is easy to construct and uses a variety of western motifs in coordinating fabrics. You can choose to "fussy cut" the block centers or cut squares randomly from the fabric. Directions are given for the Lap Quilt in black, but if you prefer, the Twin Quilt instructions are given in red. Refer to Accurate Seam Allowance and whenever possible use the Assembly Line Method of sewing. Press seams in direction of arrows.
Making the Blocks
- Sew one 2 1/2” x 42” Fabric A strip to one 2 1/2” x 42” Fabric B strip as shown. Press. Make four strip sets. Cut strip sets into twenty-four 6 1/2”-wide segments as shown. Repeat for second color combination as shown. (Make eight strip sets and cut into forty-eight 6 1/2"-wide segments.)
- Refer to Quick Corner Triangles to sew three blue 2 1/2” Fabric C squares and one red 2 1/2” Fabric C square to one 4 1/2” Fabric D square as shown. Press. Make twenty-four. Repeat using three red 2 1/2” Fabric C squares, one blue 2 1/2” Fabric C square, and one 4 1/2" Fabric D square as shown. Press. Make twenty-four. (Make forty-eight of each color combination.)
- Sew one unit from step 1 between two units from step 2, noting position of red Fabric C square, as shown. Press. Make twelve. Repeat for second color combination, noting position of blue Fabric C square. Press. Make twelve. (Make twenty-four of each color combination.)

- Sew one 6 1/2” Fabric A square between two units from step 1 as shown. If Fabric A is "fussy cut", note orientation. Press. Make six of each color combinations. (Make twelve of each color combination.)

- Sew one unit from step 4 between two units from step 3 as shown. Press. Make six and label Block 1. Repeat for second color combination and label Block 2. Block measures 14 1/2” square unfinished. (Make twelve of each color combination.)
- Sew together four 1 1/2” Lattice Corner Squares and three 1 1/2 x 14 1/2” Fabric E strips as shown. Press. Make five. (Sew together five 1 1/2" Lattice Corner Squares and four 1 1/2" x 14 1/2" Fabric E strips. Press. Make seven.)

- Arrange and sew together four 1 1/2” x 14 1/2” Fabric E strips, two of Block 1 and one Block 2 as shown. Press. Make two. (Arrange and sew together five 1 1/2" x 14 1/2" Fabric E strips, two of Block 1 and two of Block 2. Press. Make three.)

- Arrange and sew together four 1 1/2" x 14 1/2" Fabric E strips, two of Block 2 and one of Block 1 as shown. Press. Make two. (Arrange and sew together five 1 1/2" x 14 1/2" Fabric E strips, two of Block 2 and two of Block 1. Press. Make three.)

Referring to Lap Quilt layout, arrange and sew rows from steps 6, 7, and 8 together. Press. (For the Bed Quilt, arrange and sew together rows from steps 6, 7, and 8, using six rows of four blocks each)

Adding the Borders
- Refer to Adding the Borders to sew 1” x 42” Accent Border strips together end-to-end to make one continuous 1”-wide First Border strip. Measure quilt through center from side to side. Cut two 1”-wide First Border strips to this measurement. Sew to top and bottom of quilt. Press seams toward border.
- Measure quilt through center from top to bottom including border just added. Cut two 1”-wide Accent Border strips to this measurement. Sew to sides of quilt. Press.
- Refer to steps 1 and 2 to join, measure, trim, and sew 3 1/2"-wide Outside Border strips to top, bottom, and sides of quilt. Press.
Layering and Finishing
- Cut backing crosswise into two equal pieces. Sew pieces together lengthwise to make one 60” x 80” (approximate) backing piece. Press and trim to 60” x 75”. (Cut backing and trim to make one 80” x 107” piece.)
- Referring to Layering the Quilt to arrange and baste backing, batting, and top together. Hand or machine quilt as desired.
- Refer to Binding the Quilt to sew 2 3/4” x 42” binding strips end-to-end to make one continuous 2 3/4”-wide binding strip. Bind quilt to finish.
