Summer Fun Table Quilt

The end of summer is celebrated in a gigantic way with this quick and easy, yet striking, table quilt. Make the Summertime Apron to coordinate your ensemble. Fabric shown is from the Debbie Mumm® for Jo-Ann Fabric and Crafts Family Reunion Collection.

Read all instructions before beginning and use 1/4”-wide seam allowance throughout.

Getting Started

This rooster motif fabric is the perfect fit for the center and borders of this table quilt. Easy to piece, it adds interest to the simple quilt. Refer to Accurate Seam Allowance and whenever possible use the Assembly Line Method of sewing. Press seams in direction of arrows.

Making the Quilt

  1. Sew two 1 1/4” x 16” Fabric B pieces to top and bottom of 16” Fabric A square as shown. Press.


  2. Sew two 1 1/4” x 17 1/2” Fabric B pieces to sides of Fabric A square as shown. Press.


  3. Making Quick Corner Triangles, sew two 3 1/2” Fabric B squares to ends of 3 1/2” x 17 1/2” Fabric C pieces as shown. Press. Make 4.


  4. Sew two 3 1/2” squares to ends of two units from step 3 as shown. Press. Make 2.


  5. Sew two units from step 3 to top and bottom of unit from step 2. Press.
  6. Sew units from step 4 to sides of unit from step 5. Press.
  7. Sew two 1 1/2” x 23 1/2” Fabric B pieces to top and bottom of unit from step 6. Press.
  8. Sew two 1 1/2” x 25 1/2” Fabric B pieces to sides of unit from step 7. Press.
  9. Draw a diagonal line on wrong side of one 6” Fabric B square. Place marked square and one 6” Fabric D square right sides together. Sew scant 1/4” away from drawn line on both sides to make half-square triangles as shown. Make four. Cut on drawn line and press. This will make eight half-square triangle units. Square units to 5 1/2”.



  10. Sew two half-square units from step 9, two 5 1/2” Fabric E squares, and one 5 1/2” Fabric D square together as shown. Press. Make four.


  11. Sew two 5 1/2” Fabric F squares to ends of unit from step 8 as shown. Press. Make two.



  12. Referring to layout, sew two units from step 10 to top and bottom of unit from step 8. Press.
  13. Referring to layout, sew two units from step 2 to sides of unit from step 11. Press.
  14. Referring to layout, sew two 1 ½” x 35 ½” Fabric B pieces to top and bottom of unit from step 13. Press.
  15. Sew two 1 ½” x 37 ½” Fabric B pieces to sides of unit from step 14. Press.

Adding the Borders

  1. Referring to layout, sew two 1 ¼” x 37 ½” Fabric C Accent Strips to top and bottom of unit from step 15. Press.
  2. Sew two 1 ¼” x 39 1/2” Fabric C Accent Strips to sides of unit from step 1. Press.
  3. Sew 4 ½” Fabric A Outside Border strips end-to-end to make one continuous 4 1/2” strip. Referring to Adding the Borders, measure quilt through center from side to side. Cut two 4 1/2”-wide Fabric A strips to this measurement. Sew to top and bottom of quilt. Press seams toward border.
  4. Measure quilt through center from top to bottom, including border just added. Cut two 4 1/2”-wide Fabric A pieces to this measurement. Sew to sides of quilt. Press.

Layering and Finishing

  1. Referring to Layering the Quilt, arrange and baste 56” square (approximate) backing piece, batting, and top together. Hand or machine quilt as desired.
  2. Sew 2 3/4”-wide binding strips together end-to-end to make one continuous 2 3/4”-wide binding strip. Refer to Binding the Quilt and bind to finish.
