Who can resist this witty owl and grinning pumpkin? Add a lighthearted touch to your fall festivities with this whimsical wallhanging. This autumn cutey is quick and easy to create, thanks to quick-fuse appliqué. Read all instructions before beginning and use 1/4" seams throughout.

Fabric Requirements

• Background - 1/3 yard
• Accent Border - 1/8 yard
• Border - 1/6 yard
• Four-patch Corner Squares - 1/8 yard (or 1 1/2" x 15" strip) each of two fabrics
• Binding - 1/8 yard
• Backing & Lightweight Batting - 5/8 yard each
• Appliqué Pieces - Coordinated scraps
• Appliqué Heavyweight Fusible Web
• Notions - Permanent fine-point felt pen

Cutting the Strips & Pieces

• Background - One 10 1/2" x 12 1/2" piece
• Accent Border - Two 1" x 44" strips, cut into
  • Two 1" x 13 1/2" strips
  • Two 1" x 10 1/2" strips
• Border - Two 2 1/2" x 44" strips, cut into
  • Two 2 1/2" x 13 1/2" strips
  • Two 2 1/2" x 11 1/2" strips
• Four-patch Corner Squares
  • One 1 1/2" x 15" strip each of two fabrics
• Binding - Two 1" x 44" strips, cut into
  • Two 1" x 18 1/2" strips and two 1" x 15 1/2" strips

Background Assembly

Assemble wallhanging top before adding appliqué design. Use 1/4" seams and press all seams after each sewing step.

1. Sew 1" x 10 1/2" accent border strips to top and bottom of 10 1/2" x 12 1/2" background piece. Press seams toward accent border.
2. Sew 1" x 13 1/2" accent border strips to sides. Press.
3. Sew 2 1/2" x 11 1/2" border strips to top and bottom. Press seams toward border.
4. To make four-patch corner squares, sew two 1 1/2" x 15" strips together to make one 2 1/2" x 15" strip set. Press. Using rotary cutter and ruler, cut eight 2 1/2" x 1 1/2" pieces from this strip set.
5. Sew pieces together in pairs to make four four-patch corner squares. Four-patch corner squares will now measure 2 1/2" square.
6. Sew four-patch corner squares to each end of two 2 1/2" x 13 1/2" border strips. Press seams toward border. Pin and sew borders to sides. Press.
7. Sew 1" x 15 1/2" binding strips to top and bottom. Press seams toward binding.
8. Sew 1" x 18 1/2" binding strips to sides. Press.

Quick-Fuse Appliqué

Read Quick-Fuse Appliqué directions.

Trace owl, moon, pumpkin, weathervane, pumpkin face, and seven leaves. Quick-fuse design to background, referring to color photo for placement. Use permanent felt pen to make owl eyes.

Layering & Finishing

1. Position top and backing right sides together. Lay both pieces on top of batting and pin all three layers together. Using 1/4" seam, sew around edges leaving an opening for turning. Trim backing and batting to same size as top. Trim corners, turn right side out, hand stitch opening closed, and
   press.
2. Machine or hand quilt in seam line of accent border, binding, and four-patch corner squares. Outline appliqué design by quilting 1/16" away from edge of design. Quilt leaves in border using leaf template.
