Cabin In The Mountains

This rustic little cabin nestles snugly among the pines and the peaks of Delectable Mountains blocks. The lights and darks of the scrappy Log Cabin blocks form their own hills and valleys, creating the perfect frame for a thoroughly charming wallhanging. Read all instructions before beginning and use 1⁄4" seams throughout.
Fabric Requirements:
Directional fabrics are not recommended.

Cutting the Pieces
Pre-wash and press fabrics. Using rotary cutter, see-through ruler, and cutting mat, cut the following strips and pieces. If indicated, some will need to be cut again into smaller strips and pieces. The approximate width of the fabric is 42". Measurements for all pieces include 1⁄4" seam allowance.
Fabric A (dark triangles)
Two 2 1⁄2" x 42" strips, cut into thirty-two 2 1⁄2" squares
One 8 1⁄2" x 42" strip, cut into four 8 1⁄2" squares
Fabric B (light triangles)
Three 2 1⁄2" x 42" strips, cut into thirty-six 2 1⁄2" squares
One 8 1⁄2" x 42" strip, cut into four 8 1⁄2" squares
Fabric C (corner triangles) One 2 1⁄2" x 42" strip, cut into four 2 1⁄2" squares

Piecing The Blocks
Make the Delectable Mountains and Log Cabin Blocks first, then assemble with the various borders to complete quilt top. For each piecing step, use the assembly-line method as you go. Position pieces right sides together and line up all sets next to your sewing machine. Stitch first set together and continue sewing without breaking your thread. Cut threads and press seams in direction of arrows in diagrams.
Delectable Mountains Blocks
- For this step and steps 2 and 5 below, refer to Quick Corner Triangles directions . Using 2 1/2" squares of Fabric A and Fabric B, make thirty-two units. Press.
- Using 2 1/2" squares of Fabric B and Fabric C, make four units. Press.
- Lay out four units from step 1 as shown and sew together. Add triangle unit from step 2 to the end. Press. Repeat to make a total of four.
- Lay out four units from step 1 as shown and sew together. Press. Repeat to make a total of four.

- Using 8 1/2" squares of Fabric A and B, make a total of four units. Press.

- Sew unit from step 4 to right side of unit from step 5. Be sure fabrics are positioned as shown. Press. Repeat to make a total of four.
- Sew unit from step 3 to top of unit from step 6, matching seams. Press. Repeat to make a total of four. Block will measure 10 1/2" square.
Log Cabin Blocks
Vary the combinations of dark and light fabrics from block to block to make a pleasing scrappy assortment.
- Sew 1 1/2" center square and 1/4" x 1 1/2" light piece together. Press.
- Sew 1 1/4" x 2 1/2" light piece to top of unit from step 1. Press.
- Sew 1 1/4" x 2 1/4" dark piece to side of unit from step 2. Press.
- Sew 1 1/4" x 3" dark piece to bottom of unit from step 3. Press.
- Sew 1 1/4" x 3" light piece to side of unit from step 4. Press.
- Sew 1 1⁄4" x 3 3⁄4" light piece to top of unit from step 5. Press.
- Sew 1 1⁄4" x 3 3⁄4" dark piece to side of unit from step 6. Press.
- Sew 1 1⁄4" x 4 1⁄2" dark piece to bottom of unit from step 7. Press. Repeat steps 1 through 8 for a total of twelve blocks. Block will measure 4 1⁄2" square.
Center Unit
- Referring to the Cabin in the Mountains Layout below, arrange the four Delectable Mountains blocks with large light triangles toward the center. Sew blocks together in pairs. Press seams in opposite directions. Sew rows together. Press.
- Measure quilt through the center from side to side. Cut one 1 1⁄4" back-ground border strip in half. Trim these pieces to the measurement. Sew to top and bottom. Press toward border.
- Measure quilt through the center from top to bottom. Trim remaining 1 1⁄4" background border strips to this measurement. Sew to sides. Press.
Borders and Applique
- Refer to Appliqué directions. Trace appliqué designs . Center and Quick Fuse appliqué designs in light triangle area of Delectable Mountains blocks, referring to color photo for placement.
- Repeat measuring as described in step 2 of Center Unit Section. Trim and sew two 1" accent border strips to top and bottom. Press toward center border.
- Repeat measuring as described in step 3 of Center Unit Section. Trim and sew two 1" accent border strips to sides. Press.
- Repeat measuring as described in step 3 of Center Unit Section. Trim and sew two 1 1/4" accent side strips to quilt. Press toward side strips.
- Repeat measuring as described in step 2 Center Unit Section. Trim and sew two 1 1⁄2" accent top and bottom strips to quilt. Press.
- Referring to Cabin in the Mountains Layout, arrange two rows of six Log Cabin blocks each. Sew blocks together and press.
- Sew Log Cabin rows to top and bottom of quilt, easing to fit as needed. Press toward top and bottom strips.
- Repeat measuring as described in step 2 above. Trim and sew two 1 1⁄2" border strips to top and bottom. Press toward border.
- Repeat measuring as described in step 3 above. Trim and sew two 1 1⁄2" border strips to sides. Press.
