Block Twelve

Fabric Requirements:

Making the Block

  1. Refer to Quick Corner Triangles [http://www.debbiemumm.com/Projects/Quilting/GeneralDirections.aspx#csp]. Making a quick corner triangle sew one1 5/8” Fabric C square to one 2 3/4” Fabric A square as shown. Press. Make four, one of each fabric combination using Fabric E, G, and D squares as shown.


  2. Making quick corner triangles sew one 2 3/4” Fabric C square and one 2 3/4” Fabric E square to one 5” x 2 3/4” Fabric A piece as shown. Press. Make four, one of each assorted fabric combination as shown.



  3. Referring to block diagram sew one C/E unit from step 2 between two matching units from step 1 as shown. Press. Make another unit using D/G unit from step 2 and remaining units from step 1 as shown. Press.

  4. Making quick corner triangles sew one 1 5/8” Fabric C, one 1 5/8” Fabric G, one 1 5/8” Fabric E, and one 1 5/8” Fabric D square to 5” Fabric A square as shown. Press.


  5. Sew unit from step 4 between two remaining units from step 2 matching fabrics as shown. Press.


  6. Sew unit from step 5 between two units from step 3 matching fabrics as shown. Press Block Twelve measures 9 1/2” square.


  7. If desired embroider, by hand or machine, the center of block with your initials and current year or highlight the center with a unique quilting pattern. If the quilt is a gift, embroider the recipient's name or initials.

Making the Block

  1. Sew one 2” x 42” Fabric H strip between two 1” x 42” Fabric G strips as shown. Press. Make eight strip sets. Cut strip sets into thirty-one 9 1/2”-wide segments as shown.


  2. Arrange blocks in four rows of three blocks each. You may choose to follow our arrangement or rearrange as desired. Sew four sashing segments from step 1 and three blocks together as shown to make a row. Press. Make four rows.


  3. Arrange and sew four 3” Fabric I squares and three segments from step 1 as shown to make a Sashing row. Press. Make five.


  4. Referring to quilt layout and photo, arrange and sew five Sashing rows from step 3 and four block rows from step 2 to make quilt top.

Adding the Borders

  1. Refer to Adding the Borders. Sew 1 1/4” x 42" First Border strips together end-to-end to make one continuous 1 1/4"-wide border strip. Press. Measure quilt through center from side to side. Cut two 1 1/4"-wide border strips to this measurement. Sew to top and bottom of quilt. Press seams toward border.
  2. Measure quilt through center from top to bottom including borders just added. Cut two 1 1/4"-wide First Border strips to this measurement. Sew to sides of quilt. Press.
  3. Refer to steps 1 and 2 to join, measure, trim, and sew 5 1/2"-wide Outside Border strips to top, bottom, and sides of quilt. Press.

Layering and Finishing

  1. Cut backing in half crosswise. Sew pieces together to make one 56" x 80" (approximate) backing piece. Press and trim to 56” x 66”.
  2. Arrange and baste backing, batting, and top together. Machine or hand quilt.

Refer to Binding the Quilt. Sew 2 3/4"-wide binding strips end-to-end to make one continuous 2 3/4"-wide binding strip. Bind quilt to finish.
