Block Eight

"Mumm Flower"

The fabric requirements for the entire quilt are available here.

Fabric Requirements:

Fabric A—from 10”-wide strip cut one 10” square for background
Fabric C—from 2 3/4”-wide strip, cut one 2 3/4” square for center.
Fabric D—from 5 1/2”-wide strip cut one 5 1/2” x 15” piece for flowers.
Fabric E—use fabric leftover after cutting strips for leaves.
Fabric G—from 1”-wide strip, cut one 12”-long piece for stems.
Fabric H—cut one 2” x 6” piece for flower centers.
Lightweight Fusible Web—1/4 yard

Making the Block

  1. Referring to appliqué pattern diagram, fold 10” Fabric A square in quarters and press. Re-fold in quarters diagonally and press. The pressed lines will correspond to the center and diagonal lines in diagram.
  2. Using a removable marker, trace center, leaf, stem, and flower appliqué positions on Fabric A square.
  3. Our instructions are for Quick-Fuse Appliqué. If you prefer hand appliqué, refer to Hand Appliqué, reverse leaf pattern, and add 1/4”-wide seam allowances to all appliqués. Referring to Quick-Fuse Appliqué, trace four each of Leaf, Stem, Flower Center , and Flower patterns on paper side of fusible web. Trace one Block Center pattern on fusible web.
  4. Use Fabric E for leaves, Fabric G for stems, Fabric D for flowers, Fabric C for center, and Fabric H for flower centers. Press fusible web to wrong side appropriate fabric pieces. Cut out fused appliqués and referring to block layout, arrange and fuse appliqués to Fabric A square. Finish appliqué edges with machine satin stitch or other decorative stitching as desired. Square block to 9 1/2”.
