Block Six

"Mountain Ash"

The fabric requirements for the entire quilt are available here.

Fabric Requirements:

Fabric A—from 2 1/2”-wide strip, cut four 2 1/2” x 5”pieces and four 2 1/2” x 3” pieces.

Fabric D—from 5 1/2”-wide strip, cut one 5 1/2” square.

Fabric E—from 3 1/2”-wide strip cut four 3” squares.

Fabric G—from 5 1/2”-wide strip, cut one 5 1/2” x 6 1/2” piece for leaf appliqué.

Fabric I—from 2"-wide strip cut eight 2” squares.

Lightweight Fusible Web—5 1/2” x 6 1/2” piece

Making the Block

  1. Refer to making Quick Corner Triangles. Making quick corner triangles sew four 3” Fabric E squares to 5 1/2” Fabric D square as shown. Press.


  2. Making quick corner triangles sew one 2” Fabric I square to one 2 1/2” x 3” Fabric A piece as shown. Press. Make four, two of each variation as shown.


  3. Sew units from step 2 together in pairs as shown. Press. Make two.


  4. Sew unit from step 1 between two units from step 3 as shown. Press.


  5. Making quick corner triangles sew one 2” Fabric I square to one 2 1/2” x 5” Fabric A piece as shown. Press. Make four, two of each variation as shown.


  6. Sew units from step 5 together in pairs as shown. Press. Make two.


  7. Sew unit from step 4 between two units from step 6 as shown. Press. Block Six measures 9 1/2” square.



Adding the Appliqués

  1. Referring to Quick-Fuse Appliqué, trace Mountain Ash Leaf pattern on paper side of fusible web. You may need to angle the pattern to fit. If you prefer hand appliqué, refer to Hand Appliqué, reverse pattern, and add 1/4”-wide seam allowance to pattern.
  2. Press fusible web to wrong side of 5 1/2” x 6 1/2” Fabric G piece. Cut out fused leaf and referring to block layout, arrange and fuse leaf to Block Six. Finish appliqué edges with machine satin stitch or other decorative stitching as desired.
