Block Four

"Maple Leaf"

The fabric requirements for the entire quilt are available here.

Fabric Requirements:

Fabric A—from 5 1/2”-wide strip, cut one 5 1/2” square.

Fabric C—from 1 1/2”-wide strip, cut one 1 1/2” x 8 1/2” strip and one 1 1/2” x 7 1/2” strip.

Fabric D—from 1 1/2”-wide strip, cut one 1 1/2” x 6 1/2” strip and one 1 1/2” x 5 1/2” strip.

Fabric E—from 1 1/2”-wide strip, cut one 1 1/2” x 7 1/2” strip and one 1 1/2” x 6 1/2” strip.

Fabric F—from 1 1/2”-wide strip, cut one 1 1/2” x 9 1/2” strip and one 1 1/2” x 8 1/2” strip.

Fabric J—Maple Leaf Appliqué 6 1/2” square

Lightweight Fusible Web—6 1/2” square

Making the Block

  1. Sew together 5 1/2” Fabric A square and 1 1/2” x 5 1/2” Fabric D strip as shown. Press.


  2. Sew 1 1/2” x 6 1/2” Fabric D strip to side of unit from step 1 as shown. Press.


  3. Sew 1 1/2” x 6 1/2” Fabric E strip to top of unit from step 2 as shown. Press seam toward Fabric E. Sew 1 1/2” x 7 1/2” Fabric E strip to side of unit as shown. Press.


  4. Sew 1 1/2” x 7 1/2” Fabric C strip to bottom of unit from step 3 as shown. Press seam toward Fabric C. Sew 1 1/2” x 8 1/2” Fabric C strip to side of unit as shown. Press.


  5. Sew 1 1/2” x 8 1/2” Fabric F strip to top of unit from step 4 as shown. Press seam toward Fabric F. Sew 1 1/2” x 9 1/2” Fabric F strip to side of unit as shown. Press. Block Four measures 9 1/2” square.


Adding the Appliqué

  1. Referring to Quick-Fuse Appliqué, trace Maple Leaf pattern on paper side of fusible web. Cut out leaf 1/4” beyond drawn lines. If you prefer hand appliqué, refer to Hand Appliqué, reverse pattern, and add 1/4”-wide seam allowance to pattern.
  2. Press fusible web to wrong side of Fabric J. Cut out fused leaf and referring to block layout, arrange and fuse leaf to Block Four. Finish appliqué edges with machine satin stitch or other decorative stitching as desired.
