"Scattered Oak"
The fabric requirements for the entire quilt are available here.
Fabric Requirements:
Fabric A—from 5 1/2”-wide strip, cut one 5 1/2” x 9” piece for appliqués.
Fabric B—from 3/4” x 22” strip cut two 3/4” x 11” strips
Fabric C—from 2 3/4”-wide strip, cut one 2 1/4” x 11” strip. From 1 1/2”-wide strip, cut one 1 1/4” x 11” strips.
Fabric D—from 2”-wide strip, cut one 1 3/4” x 11” strip. From 1 1/4”-wide strip cut two 1 1/4” x 11” strips.
Fabric E—from 1”-wide strip, cut two 1” x 11” strips and one 3/4” x 11” strip.
Fabric F—from 3 1/2”-wide strip, cut one 1 3/4” x 11” strip.
Fabric G—from 1”-wide strip cut one 1” x 11” strip and one 3/4” x 11” strip.
Lightweight Fusible Web—one 5” x 9” piece
Making the Block
1. Arrange as shown and sew together the following strips:
Two 1 1/4” x 11” Fabric D
Two 1” x 11” Fabric E
One 3/4” x 11” Fabric G
One 2 1/4” Fabric C
Press. Cut two 5” x 5” segments.
2. Arrange as shown and sew together the following strips:
Two 3/4” x 11” Fabric B
One 1 1/4” x 11” Fabric C
One 1” x 11” Fabric G
One 3/4” x 11” Fabric E
One 1 3/4” x 11” Fabric F
One 1 3/4” x 11” Fabric D
Press. Cut two 5” x 5” segments.
3. Referring to diagram arrange and sew together one unit from step 1 to one unit from step 2 as shown. Press. Make two, noting position and direction of units.
4. Sew together units from step 3 as shown. Press. Block Two measures 9 1/2” square.
Adding the Appliqués
- Referring to Quick-Fuse Appliqué, trace three Oak Leaf patterns on paper side of fusible web. If you prefer hand appliqué, refer to Hand Appliqué and add 1/4”-wide seam allowances to patterns.
- Press fusible web to wrong side of 5” x 9” Fabric A piece. Cut out fused leaves and referring to block layout, arrange and fuse leaves to Block Two. Finish appliqué edges with machine satin stitch or other decorative stitching as desired. Embroider veins on leaf by hand or machine.
