Block Eight

"Happiness"

The fabric requirements for the entire quilt are available here.

Fabric Requirements:

Fabric B —From 8"-wide strip, cut one 8" square, scrap for holly berries (optional)

Fabric C —From 6"-wide strip, cut handle appliqué (6" x 9" piece), one 2" x 3 1/2" piece, one 2" square

Fabric F —Scrap for two holly leaves

Fabric G —From 8"-wide strip, cut one 8" square, two 6 1/2" x 2" pieces, one 3 1/2" square

Lightweight Fusible Web (optional)—1/4 yard

Red Buttons—Three assorted (optional)

Making the Happiness Block

Refer to Quick-Fuse Appliqué. (For hand appliqué, refer to Hand Appliqué and add 1/4"-wide seam allowance to appliqué patterns.) Trace Handle Pattern on paper side of fusible web. Using Fabric C scrap, prepare handle for quick fuse appliqué. Fold and press 8" Fabric B square in half diagonally, being careful not to stretch fabric. Fold in half again and press. Unfold square. Using press lines as placement guides, fuse handle to Fabric B square so that top of handle is centered on one fold line and ends of handle extend 1/4" below other fold line. Fuse in place.

Refer to Quick Corner Triangles. Making a quick corner triangle sew unit from step 1 to 8" Fabric C square, right sides together. Press.

Sew one 2" x 6 1/2" Fabric G piece to 2" Fabric C square as shown. Press. Sew this unit to unit from step 2 as shown. Press.

Sew one 2" x 6 1/2" Fabric G piece to 2" x 3 1/2" Fabric C piece as shown. Press. Sew this unit to unit from step 3 as shown. Press.

Making a quick corner triangle, sew 3 1/2" Fabric G square to unit from step 4 as shown. Press. Happiness Block measures 9 1/2" square.

Use Holly Leaf and Berry Patterns to trace two leaves and three berries on paper side of fusible web. Use Fabric F scrap for leaves and Fabric B scrap for berries. Referring to block layout, arrange and fuse appliqués to Happiness Block. Finish appliqué edges with machine satin stitch or other decorative stitching if desired. Assorted red buttons may be used instead of berry appliqués.
