Getting Started

Seam allowances are 1/4". Refer to Accurate Seam Allowance. Whenever possible, use the Assembly Line Method. Press seams in direction of arrows.

Pieces Needed for Block Eleven

Fabric C (dark red) – from 1 1/2"-wide strip, cut one 1 1/2" x 21" strip

Fabric D (lt. brown) – from 2 1/2"-wide strip, cut one 2 1/2" x 9 1/2" piece

Fabric K (dark brown) – from 2 1/2"-wide strip, cut one 2 1/2" square

Fabric N (blue) – from 1 1/2"-wide strip, cut

Fabric P (cream) – from 1 1/2"-wide strip, cut one 1 1/2" x 21" strip

Fabric Q (brown/gold) – from 1 1/2"-wide strip, cut

Making the Block

  1. Sew one 1 1/2" x 4 1/2" Fabric Q piece between two 1 1/2" x 4 1/2" Fabric N pieces as shown. Press.


  2. Repeat step 1 using one 1 1/2" x 6 1/2" Fabric Q piece and two 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" Fabric N pieces; one 1 1/2" x 8 1/2" Fabric Q piece and two 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" Fabric N pieces; and one 1 1/2" x 10 1/2" Fabric Q piece and two 1 1/2" Fabric N squares as shown. Press. Make one of each.


  3. Arrange and sew together units from step 1 and step 2 as shown. Press.


  4. Sew one 2 1/2" Fabric K square between two 2 1/2" x 5 1/2" Fabric Q pieces as shown. Press.


  5.   Sew together one 7 1/2" x 12 1/2" Fabric Q piece and unit from step 4 as shown. Press.


  6. Sew together one 1 1/2" x 21" Fabric C strip and one 1 1/2" x 21" Fabric P strip as shown to make a strip set. Press. Cut twelve 1 1/2"-wide segments.


  7. Arrange and sew together twelve segments from step 6 as shown. Press.


  8. Sew one 2 1/2" x 9 1/2" Fabric D piece between two 5 1/2" x 9 1/2" Fabric N pieces as shown. Press.


  9. Arrange and sew together units from steps 3, 5, 7 and 8 as shown. Press. Block Eleven measures 12 1/2" x 24 1/2" (unfinished).
