Getting Started

Seam allowances are 1/4". Refer to Accurate Seam Allowance. Whenever possible, use the Assembly Line Method. Press seams in direction of arrows.

Pieces Needed for Block Ten

Fabric B (red) – from 3 1/2"-wide strip, cut two 3 1/2" squares

Fabric F (cedar green) – from 6 1/2"-wide strip, cut two 6 1/2" squares

Fabric J (gold) – from 4 1/2"-wide strip, cut one 4 1/2" x 15" piece

Fabric L (dark green) – from 6 1/2"-wide strip, cut two 6 1/2" squares

Fabric M (burgundy) – from 3 1/2"-wide strip, cut two 3 1/2" squares

Fabric O (Black) – from 2 1/2"-wide strip, cut one 2 1/2" x 22" piece

Fabric P (Cream) – from 2 1/2 "-wide strip, cut one 2 1/2 " x 15" piece.

Lightweight Fusible Web – 3/8 yard

Making the Block

  1. Refer to Quick Corner Triangles. Sew one 3 1/2" Fabric B square to one 6 1/2" Fabric F square as shown. Press. Make two. Repeat using 3 1/2" Fabric M squares and 6 1/2" Fabric L squares.

  2. Refer to Quick-Fuse Appliqué. Use bee pattern (six pieces) to trace four each of bee head, bee stinger, bee body, bee stripe, bee wing 1 and bee wing 2 on fusible web. Use 2 1/2" x 22" Fabric O piece to prepare heads, stingers, and stripes; 2 1/2" x 15" Fabric P piece to prepare wings 1 and 2; and 4 1/2" x 15" Fabric J piece to prepare bodies for fusing.
  3. Refer to block diagram above to position and fuse one bee head, stinger, wing 1, wing 2, body, and stripe to each unit from step 1 as shown. Finish appliqué edges with machine satin stitch or other decorative stitching as desired.
  4. Arrange and sew together units from step 3 as shown. Press.
