Getting Started
Seam allowances are 1/4". Refer to Accurate Seam Allowance. Whenever possible, use the Assembly Line Method. Press seams in direction of arrows.
Pieces Needed for Block Nine
Fabric C (dark red) – from 4 1/2"-wide strip, cut one 4 1/2" x 12" piece
Fabric E (blue) – from 5 1/2"-wide strip, cut two 5 1/2" x 14 1/2" pieces
Fabric F (cedar green) – from 4 1/2"-wide strip, cut one 4 1/2" x 14" piece
Fabric J (gold) – from 5 1/2"-wide strip, cut one 5 1/2" x 14" piece
Fabric K (dark brown) – from 4 1/2"-wide strip, cut one 4 1/2" x 14 1/2" piece
Fabric L (dark green) – from 1/2"-wide strip, cut one 1/2" x 26" piece
Lightweight Fusible Web – 1/4 yard
Making the Block

Sew 4 1/2" x 14 1/2" Fabric K piece between two 5 1/2" x 14 1/2" Fabric E pieces as shown. Press.

Refer to Quick-Fuse Appliqué. Use large, medium, and small sunflower and sunflower center, large leaf, and small leaf patterns to trace one of each sunflower and sunflower center, four large leaves (two regular and two reversed), and three small leaves (two regular and one reversed) on fusible web. Use 5 1/2" x 14" Fabric J piece to prepare one of each sunflower, 4 1/2" x 12" Fabric C piece to prepare one of each sunflower center, and 4 1/2" x 14" Fabric F piece to prepare four large leaves and three small leaves for fusing.

Prepare 1/2" x 26" Fabric L piece for fusing. From this piece, cut one piece 1/4" x 6", one piece 1/4" x 8", and one piece 1/4" x 10" for flower stems.
- Refer to block diagram above to position and fuse three flower stems, one of each sunflower and sunflower center, four large leaves (two regular and two reversed), and three small leaves (two regular and one reversed) to block as shown. Finish appliqué edges with machine satin stitch or other decorative stitching as desired.
