Getting Started

Seam allowances are 1/4". Refer to Accurate Seam Allowance. Whenever possible, use the Assembly Line Method. Press seams in direction of arrows.

Pieces Needed for Block Seven

Fabric C (dark red)– from 2 1/2"-wide strip, cut:

  • one 2 1/2" x 6" piece
  • two 2 1/2" squares

Fabric H (tan)– from 2 1/2" -wide strip, cut:

  • one 2 1/2" x 11 1/2" piece
  • one 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" piece
  • five 2 1/2" squares

from 1 1/2"-wide strip, cut

  • one 1 1/2" x 14 1/2" piece
  • one 1 1/2' x 6 1/2" piece

Fabric M (burgundy)– from 4 1/2"-wide strip, cut one 4 1/2" x 9 1/2" piece

Fabric O (black) – from 2 1/2"-wide strip, cut one 2 1/2" square

Making the Block

  1. Refer to Quick Corner Triangles. Sew one 2 1/2" Fabric C square to one 2 1/2" x 11 1/2" Fabric H piece as shown. Press.

  2. Sew together one 2 1/2" Fabric H square and unit from step 1 as shown. Press.

  3. Making a quick corner triangle unit, sew one 2 1/2" Fabric H square to one 2 1/2"Fabric O square as shown. Press.

  4. . Sew together one 2 1/2" Fabric H square and unit from step 3 as shown. Press.

  5. Making a quick corner triangle unit, sew two 2 1/2" Fabric H squares to one 4 1/2" x 9 1/2" Fabric M piece as shown. Press.

  6. Making a quick corner triangle unit, sew one 2 1/2" Fabric C square to one 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" Fabric H piece as shown. Press.

  7. Arrange and sew together units from steps 4, 5, and 6 as shown. Press.

  8. Sew together units from step 2 and step 7 as shown. Press.

  9. Sew together unit from step 8 and one 1 1/2" x 6 1/2" Fabric H piece as shown. Press.

  10. Sew together unit from step 9 and one 1 1/2" x 14 1/2" Fabric H piece as shown. Press.


  11. Refer to Quick-Fuse Appliqué. Use bird wing pattern to trace one bird wing on fusible web. Use 2 1/2" x 6" Fabric C piece to prepare bird wing for fusing.

  12. Refer to block diagram above to position and fuse bird wing to block as shown. Finish appliqué edges with machine satin stitch or other decorative stitching as desired.

  13. Refer to block diagram to add one small button for bird’s eye.
