The fabric requirements for the entire quilt are available here. Cut all strips on the crosswise grain of the fabric (from selvage to selvage).

Getting Started

Seam allowances are 1/4". Refer to Accurate Seam Allowance. Whenever possible, use the Assembly Line Method. Press seams in direction of arrows.

Pieces Needed for Block Six

Fabric E (Blue)

From 7 1/4"-wide strip cut:

  • One 7 1/4" square *

From 2 3/8"-wide strip cut:

  • One 2 3/8" x 30" strip

Fabric F (Cedar Green)

From 2 1/2"-wide strip cut:

  • One 2 1/2" square

Fabric J (Gold)

From 7 1/4"-wide strip cut:

  • One 7 1/4" square *

From 5"-wide strip cut:

  • One 5" x 30" piece

Fabric M (Burgundy)

From 7 1/4"-wide strip cut:

  • One 7 1/4" square *

From 5"-wide strip cut:

  • One 5" x 30" piece

From 2 1/2"-wide strip cut:

  • One 2 1/2" square

Fabric N (Blue)

From 7 1/4"-wide strip cut:

  • One 7 1/4" square *

From 2 3/8"-wide strip cut:

  • One 2 3/8" x 30" piece

Lightweight Fusible Web – Scraps

* Cut twice diagonally to make four quarter-square triangles.

Making the Block

  1. Sew together one Fabric J quarter-square triangle and one Fabric N quarter-square triangle along one short edge as shown. Press. Make four.

  2. Sew together one 5" x 30" Fabric J strip and one 2 3/8" x 30" Fabric N strip as shown to make a strip set. Press. Cut four 6 7/8"-wide segments.

  3. Cut each 6 7/8" segment from step 2 in half once diagonally to make two triangles. Triangles labeled * will be used to complete block.

  4. Sew together one unit from step 1 and one unit from step 3 as shown. Make Press. Make four.

  5.  Arrange and sew together units from step 4 as shown. Press using Twisted Seam technique.

  6. Refer to Quick-Fuse Appliqué. Use pinwheel center circle pattern to trace one pinwheel center circle on fusible web. Use 2 1/2" Fabric M square to prepare center circle for fusing.

  7. Refer to block diagram above to position and fuse center circle to unit from step 5 as shown. Finish appliqué edges with machine satin stitch or other decorative stitching as desired.

  8. Repeat steps 1 – 7 substituting Fabric M for Fabric J, Fabric E for Fabric N, and Fabric F for Fabric M. Each Block Six measures 12 1/2" square (unfinished).
