The fabric requirements for the entire quilt are available here. Cut all strips on the crosswise grain of the fabric (from selvage to selvage).

Getting Started

Seam allowances are 1/4". Refer to Accurate Seam Allowance. Whenever possible, use the Assembly Line Method. Press seams in direction of arrows.

Pieces Needed for Block Four

Fabric B (Red)

From 6 1/2"-wide strip cut:

  • Two 6 1/2" squares

Fabric C (Dark Red)

From 6 1/2"-wide strip cut:

  • Two 6 1/2" squares

Fabric F (Cedar Green)

From 6 1/2"-wide strip cut:

  • Two 6 1/2" squares

From 3 1/2"-wide strip cut:

  • Two 3 1/2" squares

Fabric J (Gold)

From 6 1/2"-wide strip cut:

  • Two 6 1/2" squares

From 3 1/2"-wide strip cut:

  • Two 3 1/2" squares

Fabric K (Dark Brown)

From 1 1/2"-wide strip cut:

  • One 1 1/2" x 24 1/2" piece

Lightweight Fusible Web –3/8 yard

Four Small Buttons

 

Making the Block

  1. Use Flower Pattern 1 (two pieces) to trace two of each piece on fusible web. Use two 6 1/2" Fabric B squares and two 3 1/2" Fabric J squares to prepare two of Flower 1 for fusing.
  2. Refer to block diagram above to position and fuse one Flower 1 (two pieces) to one 6 1/2" Fabric F square as shown. Finish appliqué edges with machine satin stitch or other decorative stitching as desired. Make two.
  3. Repeat step 1 using Flower Pattern 2, two 6 1/2" Fabric J squares, and two 3 1/2" Fabric F squares.
  4. Repeat step 2 using 6 1/2" Fabric C squares.
  5. Arrange and sew together units from step 2 and step 4, alternating them as shown. Press.
  6. Sew together unit from step 5 and one 1 1/2" x 24" Fabric K piece as shown. Press.
  7. Refer to block diagram to add one small button to each flower center. Block Four measures 24 1/2" x 7 1/2" (unfinished).
