The fabric requirements for the entire quilt are available here. Cut all strips on the crosswise grain of the fabric (from selvage to selvage).

Getting Started

Seam allowances are 1/4". Refer to Accurate Seam Allowance. Whenever possible, use the Assembly Line Method. Press seams in direction of arrows.

Pieces Needed for Block Three

Fabric C (Dark Red)

From 6 1/2"-wide strip cut:

  • One 5 1/2" x 6 1/2" piece

From 3 1/2"-wide strip cut:

  • Two 3 1/2" squares

From 1 1/2"-wide strip cut:

  • One 1 1/2" x 5 1/2" piece
  • Two 1 1/2" x 4 1/2" pieces

Fabric G (Green)

From 4 1/2"-wide strip cut:

  • One 4 1/2" x 12 1/2" piece

Fabric H (Tan)

From 5 1/2"-wide strip cut:

  • One 5 1/2" square
  • One 2 1/2" x 5 1/2" piece

From 4 1/2"-wide strip cut:

  • One 4 1/2" x 9 1/2" piece
  • One 4 1/2" x 8 1/2" piece
  • One 4 1/2" square

From 3 1/2"-wide strip cut:

  • One 3 1/2" x 8 1/2" piece
  • Two 3 1/2" x 5 1/2" pieces
  • One 3 1/2" x 4 1/2" piece
  • Two 3 1/2" squares

From 1 1/2"-wide strip cut:

  • One 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" piece

Fabric I (Navy)

From 7 1/2"-wide strip cut:

  • One 7 1/2" x 12 1/2" piece

From 1 1/2"-wide strip cut:

One 1 1/2" x 4 1/2" piece

Making the Block

  1. Refer to Quick Corner Triangles. Sew one 3 1/2" Fabric C square to one 3 1/2" Fabric H square as shown. Press. Make two.
  2. Sew one 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" Fabric H piece to one unit from step 1 as shown. Press.
  3. Arrange and sew together one 4 1/2" x 9 1/2" Fabric H piece, one 1 1/2" x 4 1/2" Fabric I piece, one 3 1/2" x 4 1/2" Fabric H piece, unit from step 2, and one 4 1/2" x 8 1/2" Fabric H piece as shown. Press.
  4. Sew one 1 1/2" x 5 1/2" Fabric C piece to one 3 1/2" x 5 1/2" Fabric H piece as shown. Press.
  5. Arrange and sew together two 1 1/2" x 4 1/2" Fabric C pieces, unit from step 4, and one 4 1/2" Fabric H square as shown. Press.
  6. Sew together one 4 1/2" x 12 1/2" Fabric G piece and one 7 1/2" x 12 1/2" Fabric I piece as shown. Press.
  7. Making a quick corner triangle unit, sew one 5 1/2" Fabric H square to one 6 1/2" x 5 1/2" Fabric C piece as shown. Press.
  8. Sew one 5 1/2" x 2 1/2" Fabric H piece and unit from step 7 as shown. Press.
  9. Sew remaining unit from step 1 to one 3 1/2" x 5 1/2" Fabric H piece as shown. Press.
  10. Sew units from step 8 and step 9 together as shown. Press.
  11. Sew unit from step 10 to one 3 1/2" x 8 1/2" Fabric H piece as shown. Press.
  12. Arrange and sew together units from steps 5, 6, and 11 as shown. Press.
  13. Sew units from step 3 and step 12 together as shown. Press. Block Three measures 24 1/2" x 15 1/2" (unfinished).
