Getting Started

Yardage requirements, cutting instructions, general notes and layout are found here. Seam allowances are 1/4". Refer to Accurate Seam Allowance. Whenever possible, use the Assembly Line Method. Press seams in direction of arrows.

Pieces Needed for Block Nine

Fabric A—from 3 1/2"-wide strip, cut eight 3 1/2" squares
Fabric B—from 1 1/2"-wide strip, cut four 1 1/2" squares
Fabric C—from 3 1/2"-wide strip, cut two 3 1/2" squares
Fabric D—from 2 1/2"-wide strip, cut four 1 1/2" squares
Fabric E—from 3 1/2"-wide strip, cut two 3 1/2" squares
Fabric F—from 4 1/2"-wide strip, cut four 1 1/2" squares
Fabric G—from 3 1/2"-wide strip, cut two 3 1/2" squares
Fabric H—from 6 1/2"- wide strip, cut four 1 1/2" squares
Fabric I—from 3 1/2"-wide strip, cut two 3 1/2" squares

Making the Block

  1. Referring to Quick Corner Triangles, sew one 1 1/2" Fabric F square to one 3 1/2" Fabric E square as shown. Press. Make two. Making a quick corner triangle unit, sew one 1 1/2" Fabric F square to one 3 1/2" Fabric A square as shown. Press. Make two.

  2. Sew units from step 1 together in pairs as shown. Press. Make two. Sew these units together as shown. Twist seams and press to fabric A.

  3. Making a quick corner triangle unit, sew one 1 1/2" Fabric D square to one 3 1/2" Fabric A square as shown. Press. Make two. Making a quick corner triangle unit, sew one 1 1/2" Fabric D square to one 3 1/2" Fabric C square as shown. Press. Make two.


  4. Sew units from step 3 together in pairs as shown. Press. Make two. Sew these units together as shown. Twist seams and press to fabric C.


  5. Sew unit from step 2 to unit from step 4. Press.

  6. Making a quick corner triangle unit, sew one 1 1/2" Fabric B square to one 3 1/2" Fabric A square as shown. Press. Make two. Making a quick corner triangle unit, sew one 1 1/2" Fabric B square to one 3 1/2" Fabric I square as shown. Press. Make two.


  7. Sew units from step 6 together in pairs as shown. Press. Make two. Sew these units together as shown. Twist seams and press to fabric A.


  8. Making a quick corner triangle unit, sew one 1 1/2" Fabric H square to one 3 1/2" Fabric G square as shown. Press. Make two. Making a quick corner triangle unit, sew one 1 1/2" Fabric H square to one 3 1/2" Fabric A square as shown. Press. Make two.

     
  9. Sew units from step 8 together in pairs as shown. Press. Make two. Sew these units together as shown. Twist seams and press to fabric G.


  10. Sew unit from step 7 to unit from step 9. Press.


  11. Sew unit from step 5 to unit from step 10 as shown. Press. Block Nine measures 12 1/2" square.
