Off to College Laundry Bag

As bright and colorful as it is functional, this laundry bag will make life a little easier for a college-bound student. The large size, a toggle-style drawstring, and a cool monogram make this laundry bag a useful dorm accessory.

Materials Needed:

Making the Laundry Bag

  1. Turn under 1/4" hem on both long sides of 40 1/2" x 6 1/2" Fabric B strip. Press.
  2. Position pressed Fabric B strip 12" down from top edge of 40 1/2" x 36" Fabric A piece and edge stitch as shown.

  3. The monogram is embroidered on the 6" x 9" Fabric C piece. We used London font and Bernina® Artista 200E machine. If you prefer hand embroidery, refer to Embroidery Stitch Guide . Choose lettering by selecting font from a computer, clip art alphabet book, or by drawing the letters freehand. Use three strands of embroidery floss and satin stitch. After fabric is embroidered, trim to 4" x 6". Turn raw edges under 1/4" on all sides and press.
  4. Fold unit from step 2 in half lengthwise to find center. Unfold and position monogrammed piece from step 3 on Fabric B strip as shown. Edge stitch in place.

  5. Turn top edge of laundry bag under 1/4" and press.
  6. Fold bag in half lengthwise with right sides together and side and bottom raw edges aligned. Beginning at top, sew 1 3/4" down side of bag. Backstitch. Leave 1" opening, backstitch, then continue sewing side and bottom seams as shown. Reinforce seam by stitching a parallel row 1/8" from first row as shown.

  7. Fold and pin top edge 1 1/2" to wrong side of bag. Edge stitch close to hem and stitch again 1/8" from previous stitching as shown.

  8. Turn bag to right side. Use safety pin to insert cording through side seam opening. Add cord lock and knot ends of cording.
