Gift Bags

You'll never be at a loss for classy ways to present your holiday gifts. These gift bags are so quick and easy you can stitch them in no time at all.

Read all instructions before beginning and use 1⁄4" seams throughout.

Fabric Requirements – to make one Pieced Gift Bag

• Center Diamond – Scrap at least 4" square
• Pieced Strips – Assorted strips of three fabrics, measuring at least 2" x 42"
• Cuff – Scrap at least 4" x 8" piece
• Back – 1/3 yard or fat quarter
• Lining – 1⁄3 yard or fat quarter
• Needlepunch Foundation – 1⁄4 yard or piece at least 10" square

Fabric Requirements – to make one Tall or Medium Gift Bag

• Bag (Front and Back) – 3⁄8 yard
• Lining – 3⁄8 yard
• Notions –Decorative buttons, leather strips or raffia for ties.

Cutting the Pieces – Pieced Gift Bag

• First Strip – One 1 1⁄4" x 20" strip
• Second Strip – One 1⁄2" x 27" strip
• Third Strip – One 1 1⁄4" x 35" strip
• Fourth Strip – One 2" x 42" strip
• Cuff – One 4" x 8" piece
• Back – One 8" x 14" piece
• Lining – Two 8" x 14" pieces
• Needlepunch Foundation – One 8" x 9 3⁄4" piece

Assembly – Pieced Gift Bag

1. With right side up, place 4" square in center of needlepunch foundation , turning so it forms a diamond shape as shown. Pin in place.
   
2. Place first strip on one side of center diamond, right sides together with edges aligned. Sew 1⁄4" from edges. Trim first strip even with edge of center diamond. Flip sewn piece out and press. Repeat around all edges of square.
3. 
   Repeat step 2 with first, second, third and fourth strips. After fourth strip has been added, trim all excess fabric to match the needlepunch foundation . Pieced front will measure 8" x 9 3/4".
4. With right sides together, sew cuff to pieced front along 8" side. Press toward cuff.
   
5. Sew lining pieces to back and pieced front along 8" edges. Press.
6. Position sewn pieces with right sides together. Match bag front to back and lining to lining. Sew around edges of bag and lining leaving a 3" opening in lining for turning.
7. Push lining inside bag, fold down cuff, and sew on buttons.

Cutting the Pieces- Tall and Medium Sized Gift Bags

Bag Fabric

• Two 7 1⁄2" x 20" pieces (for tall bag)
• Two 11" x 13" pieces (for medium bag)

Lining

• Two 7 1⁄2" x 20" pieces (for tall bag)
• Two 11" x 13" pieces (for medium bag)

Assembly - Tall and Medium Sized Gift Bags

1. Position bag front and lining pieces with right sides together and sew along one short edge. Repeat for back and remaining lining piece. Press toward lining.
2. Position sewn pieces with right sides together. Match bag front to back and lining to lining. Sew around edges of bag and lining leaving a 3" opening in lining for turning.
3. Turn bag right side out, hand stitch opening closed, and push lining inside bag.
4. Add decorative ties, referring to color photo above .
